spitzPRINCIPAL: MS. JANELLE SPITZ

Ms. Spitz earned a B.S. in Psychology from Mary Washington College and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Old Dominion University . Prior to coming to Passage she taught English to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Dozier Middle School. She was the School Improvement Lead Teacher and was honored as Teacher of the Year. She has also worked as a Family Support Worker counseling at-risk families. Ms. Spitz is excited to work with the students and staff and Passage and is looking forward to a successful year!

When she is not at Passage, Ms. Spitz enjoys socializing, shopping, and spending time with her four-legged son, Isaac.

Mrs. Swanson grew up as a military child and came to Newport News when her father was stationed here in 1996. She attended Woodside High School and went to James Madison University to study Sports Medicine after graduation. She then pursued her Master's degree in Sports Medicine at the University of Virginia before returning to Newport News as the Athletic Trainer at her alma mater, Woodside High School. She loved working with middle and high school aged children, so she pursued a career switcher program and was given the opportunity to teach Mathematics here at Mary Passage Middle School. During this time Mrs. Swanson earned her degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from George Washington University. Her love of Mathematics led her to a position as an Instructional Coach for Newport News before returning home to Passage as an Assistant Principal.

8th GRADE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL: JOSE PETTAWAY

7th GRADE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL: MS. DYORA KINSEY

Ms. Dyora Kinsey joined Passage Middle from Norfolk Public Schools where she was a Science Teacher and Instructional Department Chair. Prior to Virginia, she served in the same capacity in Greensboro, North Carolina after obtaining her B.S. in Biology from Bennett College. While teaching, Ms. Kinsey has had the opportunity to work with different school improvement teams, as well as being trained in various school reform models and projects. During her high school educational experiences, she decided to switch roles and advance to an administrative role. Ms. Kinsey earned her M.S. in Educational Leadership/Administration and Supervision from Old Dominion University. She has 16 years of educational experience and looks forward to working with the middle school! Outside of her career, Ms. Kinsey serves as a Leader and Troop Trainer with the Boy Scouts of America.
